JUMP

ON 'JUMP'

you know how if you repeat a word ten times, it sounds wrong, or
disconnected. to repeat a word this way is to lose it. it begins to detach -
upon repetition, from it's symbol. it simply falls back into it's original
experience. one of simply sounds. the same is true when repeating an
image. the incantation of a repeated image, enables the visual field to
hallucinate. we see beneath the 'image as symbol' to its visual field of
lights and darks. more importantly, the viewer's subconscious movie
screen begins to merge with the visual field in front of them. this
hallucination become theirs. the film becomes like a blind person's stick.
philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty described this merging of being with
external tool (the film here) like this: "The blind man's stick has ceased to
be an object for him, and is no longer perceived for itself; its point has
become an area of sensitivity, extending the scope and active radius of
touch, and providing a parallel to sight." working an image, performing the
edits, molding time like clay with images and sound, the practice is one of
incanting, singing, chanting, cooking; like turning flour, water and yeast into
bread, my process feels aligned to alchemy, more than to any other. like
cooking; mending together found scrap images to make new film chant or
visual incantation is losing process. i lose myself and find myself outside,
inside and everywhere at once. like the word repeated ten times, i fall back
into an experience of myself outside of symbolism.
